Fort Worth has been pretty dead that past few weeks so I decided to make a trip home to Dallas. I figured it would be nice to spend time with my Mom for a few days before heading to Chicago for sister Blair’s wedding! My Dad was away in New York for a business trip so my Mom and I filled our day with some outdoor activities… by outdoor activities, I mean beer drinking at the Katy Trail Ice House! I love going to the Ice House because it sits right off of the Katy Trail (a long biking/rollerblading/walking/running trail for Dallasites). My Mom and I decided to ride out bikes down the trail and grab a couple of brews since the weather was so nice. We used to get the whole family together for these kinds of activities which is probably why I am a sucker for these walk-in beer garden type of places. You can enjoy the beer, soak up the Texas rays, and spend time with loved ones!

I can’t believe that Blair is about to get married! It seems like just yesterday all of us sisters were outside jumping on the trampoline together. It’s all a little bitter-sweet. It’s becoming more real since I came home to Dallas and visited my favorite places that the family used to gather at. I can’t help feeling a little nostalgic at this point. I have realized that time flies- life is always changing and so are we… physically, mentally, and emotionally. Sometimes these changes are positive and some negative, but the true test is how we handle these life transitions.

I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason, no pain is forever, and that good things come to those who wait. Blair has shown me all of these things, and rather than fearing change she has fully embraced it. A few years ago she made the brave decision to leave her job, move to Chicago, start her own blogging/web design business, adopt an adorable fox-like dog, and marry Rob! She is the definition of a trailblazer! She is so inspiring, charismatic, creative, empathetic, and loving. I only wish to grow up to be as amazing as her! This weekend is going to be life-changing as Blair moves to the next chapter of her life. I am so grateful that my sister Katherine and I are her bridesmaids and that we get witness such a wonderful event!

barcelona: wine bar & restaurant

Lately I have been drawn towards restaurants that serve their food tapas style! By doing this you get to try a little of everything without being stuffed at the end of your meal. Since every portion is small, the chef has to try to pack as much flavor into a few bite sized pieces as possible! This means that every dish is rich in flavor, visually appealing, and prepared to perfection! Barcelona Wine Bar & Restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia does just that with a Spanish style.

Once seated, my family and I ordered some drinks and enjoyed some fresh bread and olive oil. I admired the atmosphere and the romantic ambience. They had awesome black and white photographs all over the restaurant that added to the rustic, wooden style of the restaurant.

For our first round we ordered a charcuterie board… my absolute favorite! It was amazing because they had the best choices to meat available. These prime cuts of meat were displayed in the bar area and were even hanging from parts of the railing in their open kitchen.

We ordered so many dishes but one of the best was the crispy calamari. I even had a few pieces that were still in their full-bodied form! They were so fresh I swear they were probably swimming in a tank that morning.

The crispy potatoes were amazing as well, so good that we had two orders of those. We also enjoyed the house cured olives, manchego + jamon croquettes, patatas bravas, melon + pea salad, broccoli + feta, and the dry aged rib eye. We were fully satisfied with everything we had!

My cute parents clearly enjoyed themselves and were very pleased with the wine selection as well. Barcelona Wine Bar & Restaurant aims to please its customers with amazing service, delicious food, and killer atmosphere! If you are ever in Atlanta you must stop by this restaurant for some wine and tasty treats. It is so refreshing to enjoy a dining experience in a place where the chefs are truly passionate about creating awesome food!

Let Freedom Ring

My favorite way to celebrate any holiday is spending it with the people I love! My sister Katherine recently moved to Atlanta for her new job so my parents and I decided to go see her and spend the 4th of July with her. We also went to visit my Mom’s cousin’s family at their gorgeous lake house.

The lake house we went to was my Mom’s cousin’s, Tom. All of the flowers and vegetation surrounding the house made you feel like you were in a gorgeous forest. It allowed for a lot of privacy which made for a peaceful getaway.

The other really cool part was their lake front location. With a short walk down some steps, there was a two story dock fully equipped with a boat and a nice fridge full of cold brews.

The weather was absolutely wonderful! Sunny and warm during the days and cool, breezy nights. The peaches were amazing too, but I am sure anyone would guess that since we were in Georgia!

To celebrate the 4th, Tom’s wife, Laura, whipped up some amazing food. Their son Alex was in charge of the shrimp boil! I have never experienced a boil before and I was super excited to see the whole process and even more excited to eat the cooked shrimp, potatoes, and sausage.

After the water was boiling, Alex added some seasonings to the water which smelled amazing. The first ingredient to be added was the potatoes since they would take the longest to cook and absorb all the flavors!

A few minutes after the potatoes were added, it was time for the sausage. Then shortly after that the shrimp took a little swim, then it was time to eat!

The food was amazing! Anyone who is big on throwing summer parties should invest in a boiler because you can cook every all your food together and at the exact same time. This makes the clean up super easy and frees up your time to enjoy the party!

I enjoyed spending time with Alex’s wife, Emily, who has just had her first baby, Maisi! She was such a joy and was always smiling. Needless to say she stole the spotlight!

Laura often took Maisi to let Emily have some time to relax. She was also the best cook ever, we literally were spoiled at every meal.

The food was always amazing, the company was great, and the southern hospitality was even better! We really appreciated the whole visit and hope to see them again very soon!
